Teaching Philosophy

I have had the privilege of teaching a wide range of courses at the University of Minnesota and at a high school level at Tecnológico de Monterrey: Campus Eugenio Garza Lagüera and Campus Valle Alto. These experiences in Mexico, the United States and in study abroad programs in France, Germany and Spain have allowed me to work with different types of students diverse in age, abilities, interests, forms of learning, nationality, race and ethnicity. But, despite the differences, whether I am teaching language, culture or literature, my main objectives have always been to create an inclusive environment, to promote intercultural competence, and to foster collaborative learning communities in which the instructor is just a facilitator, not a figure which possesses all the knowledge.

Through a student-centered approach, focusing on these goals has proven to be effective to encourage my students to participate, share their interpretations, knowledge and experiences with others in the classroom. And, to fully develop their linguistic, communicative, interpretive and analytical skills which will be valuable in an academic setting and outside of it. In other words, my teaching philosophy is one that focuses on constructing an inclusive and cross-cultural classroom experience conducive to learning.
